Welcome to EU-EAC MARKUP

EU-EAC MARKUP is a new four-year programme jointly designed by the European Union, the EAC Secretariat and the Governments of Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda. The initiative is implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), the International Trade Centre (ITC) and other implementing partners at the national level. So far, these include the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in Kenya and the Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) in Uganda. The programme is funded from the 11th European Development Fund (EDF) through the Regional Indicative Programme for EAC.

MARKUP assists small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda to increase exports of their agriproducts, promote regional integration and improve access to the European market. It targets specific agricultural commodities (avocado, cocoa, coffee, spices, tea and horticulture).

The programme supports SMEs to improve the quality of their products by aligning them with international standards. This will allow EAC agribusinesses to benefit from existing opportunities in both East African and European markets and to meet the growing demand in the EU for agricultural output produced in the EAC. MARKUP will capitalize on this and help create sustainable market linkages between the European Union and the EAC, and contribute to job creation and inclusive development in the region.
