New Quality Champions trained to boost Uganda’s Agro-Industries
Coffee, Cocoa, & Avocado Sectors
Applying Lean principles, waste management, Six Sigma, root cause and risk analysis, process mapping, and exploratory data analysis: these were some of the key skills imparted to nine participants during a week-long Lean Training held in Uganda.
Organized by the Quality Assurance Association Uganda Limited (QAAUL) in partnership with the International Trade Centre (ITC), the training aimed to equip a new group of Quality Champions (QCs) with practical tools to enhance efficiency, quality, and food safety across Uganda’s agro-industrial value chains.
Participants from Brand Coffee Ltd, Mother Earth International Ltd, Promised Land Education, Ibero Coffee, Moonbean Chocolate, and the Ministry of Health included Quality Officers, Production Managers, and Health Officers working in the coffee, cocoa, and avocado sectors.
The training featured role plays, case studies, and hands-on exercises, all tailored to real-world challenges in Uganda’s agro-processing industry.
This initiative is part of the MARKUP II Project to strengthen SMEs in export-oriented value chains by increasing the number of trained professionals who can support quality improvement efforts.
At the end of the training, participants were tasked with developing action plans for training and coaching within their own organizations. They returned ready to lead in driving improvements in productivity, quality assurance, and food safety across Uganda’s agro-industries.
