East Africa’s Quality Champions advance with Global Good Agricultural Practice (G.A.P) training

Quality Champions

“Local capacity-building initiatives are crucial in promoting good agricultural practices and giving farmers access to expertise that understands their needs,” said Iain Lucey from GLOBAL G.A.P.

From 16–20 June 2025, 19 Quality Champions (QCs) from Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, South Sudan, and Uganda completed a five-day training on GLOBAL G.A.P. Integrated Farm Assurance (IFA) for fresh fruit and vegetables.

Organized under the EU-funded MARKUP II programme, the course aimed to strengthen the capacity of QCs and their hubs to support SMEs in implementing GLOBAL G.A.P.—a standard often required by EU buyers.

The IFA standard promotes responsible farming and safe, sustainable food production. It is a key tool for farmers seeking access to international markets and improved income opportunities.

Delivered by a GLOBALG.A.P. technical expert, the interactive training covered the General Regulations and Principles and Criteria of the IFA standard through group work and hands-on sessions.
