Building Gender-Inclusive Value Chains in Coffee and Horticulture

Rwanda — Uganda

Earlier this year, two training sessions were delivered in Kigali (Rwanda) and Kampala (Uganda) under the theme “Unlocking Potential: Gender-Inclusive Services for Sustainable Value Chains.” ITC She Trades delivered the workshops through the EU-EAC MARKUP II programme focusing on SMEs in the coffee and horticulture sectors.

More than 145 businesses across Uganda and Rwanda responded to the call—highlighting a strong demand for practical guidance on integrating gender and youth inclusion into supply chains. Participants explored gender-based constraints at the supplier level, in service delivery, and within the workplace, with each company developing a tailored action plan by the end of the training.

The sessions blended key concepts with hands-on tools like the household profile and individual workbooks, enabling participants to assess their own operations and identify concrete steps toward inclusion. Topics ranged from the business case for gender equity to inclusive farmer training and youth engagement strategies.
