Tanzanian small businesses in horticultural sector are getting ready for international markets
Dar-es-Salaam and Arusha, Tanzania, June 2019. The International Trade Centre (ITC) organised two workshops on designing competitive export strategies in Dar-es-Salaam and Arusha, Tanzania. 70 companies in the avocado and spices sectors participated.
Participants acquired the necessary know-how and tools to prepare competitive export strategy plans, as well as knowledge on how to access external markets, especially the EU market. They learned what requirements are needed and where to find them for accessing the EU market.
A wide variety of tools were used to facilitate understanding and increase absorption capacity: on-line tools and links (including EU Trade Help and other EU related elements), technical presentations, classroom exercises, group discussions, case studies, handouts, videos and coaching. The participants were also given the template on how to prepare a competitive business export plan, and were provided with coaching on how to prepare it.
The training was extremely beneficial for the better preparation of new exporters in terms of providing them the necessary tools, knowledge and information sources. The topics and content of the training identified many knowledge and practical gaps existing for new exporters in terms of going globally, which will significantly reduce the risk of failure. “I believe we will be able to better participate in foreign/international business now”, said Catherine Millanzi from Excam Tanzania Limited.
