Rwanda: Post-Harvest Management for French Beans
For Rwanda, fine beans are an important horticulture export product accounting for 70% of Rwanda’s horticulture exports including to the European Union (EU) and the United Kingdom (UK). However, due to relatively lower sector development and therefore skills level as compared to Kenya for example, the Rwanda industry is characterised by a high degree of post-harvest losses. As a result, a significant proportion of the fine bean production is not suitable for the high value export market and are instead rejected and sold to the local market as second grade produce.
Under MARKUP, the International Trade Centre is working to improve the post-harvest management and develop losses reduction strategies for fine beans from harvest, storage and transportation to processing sites. This handbook, available in both English and Kinyarwanda targets to ensure maximum understanding of the main concepts of post-harvest management and quality maintenance.
