COVID 19 Threat and Food Safety Awareness

EAC MARKUP Kenya, implemented by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) has embarked on a food safety awareness campaign to counteract possible dangers of getting infected through contaminated food.

Although according to the World Health Organization (WHO), there have not been any reports of transmission of COVID-19 through food, precautions to reduce the risk of transmission are recommended to ensure that the food we consume is safe.

MARKUP Kenya is working together with the Ministry of Trade, Cooperatives and Industrialization, the Horticulture Crop Directorate, the Fresh Produce Exporters Association (FPEAK), the Fresh Produce Consortium (FPC), the Horticultural Crops Directorate (HCD) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries.

The messages disseminated stress the need to wash hands before handling food, wash reusable bags after shopping, clean and sanitize kitchen surfaces and to observe social distancing while shopping for food at markets and supermarkets.
